Second Grade

Recognizing Patterns

In second grade, students are introduced more to the organization of music. We still play LOTS of games: partner and circle games, dancing and moving activities. Students are encouraged to create their own music through improvisation activities.

Through the use of solfege and rhythm instruments, students begin to make up their own rhythms and melodies. We spend more time on music notation, such as introduction to the staff, barlines, quarter and eighth notes, etc.

Students will play small percussive instruments, such as egg shakers, rhythm sticks, claves, triangles, jingle bells, and several others. This allows them to perform the music they are learning to read with an instrument.

Throughout the year, students are introduced to our Music Memory selections, which covers sixteen different composers from different musical eras dating back to the 1500's, and teaches them to listen for different aspects of music, the history of music, as well as proper audience behavior.
