Bands of Texts
These are the ranges of reading levels that children tend to be in when in fourth grade. It is a wide range and is different for every student. Whether they are reading at grade level, below, or above grade level, the goal is the same: to grow their level of text complexity by a minimum of one grade level.
We understand, and value, the importance of being able to read and comprehend the increasingly complex texts students will encounter in fourth grade and beyond in order to meet their educational goals. We will provide ongoing, planned, and targeted interventions throughout the year for all students not reading at grade level.
Our goal is not about the reading level itself, but rather to develop lifelong learners who have a love of reading. In class, students will choose books on their level based on their interests. Developing a love of reading is all about personalizing reading for each student. This is why CHOICE is the key! If you walk into our class on any given day, you find students all reading different books, working on the skills necessary to continue to move along the bands of texts.
We will be determining reading levels during the first weeks of school and students will learn about choosing the right books to read based on their current level and interests. I will be sending this information home so that you can partner with me to help your child become the best reader they can be! The only way to become a better reader is to read more. While I am not collecting reading logs, it is the expectation that students read outside of school. The more they read the better! Magazines and online journals, websites, blogs, and books count along with traditional books. Encouraging reading is the single best thing you can do for your child's educational journey in my opinion!
