Day of Design - Water Warriors Innovation Challenge
Today’s To Do List
- Take a team picture and tweet out with the #kleinwaterwarriors hashtag and post on social media.
- Take a video and send it to your principal telling him/her what you’re learning and showing them your excitement for the day!
- Work on your project until about 11:15 a.m. Be sure to tweet out and post pics as you go. Be sure to check kisd.us/kleinwaterwarriors for information. We will be updating the site all morning with FAQ.
- Around 11:15 a.m., begin completing the SELF REFLECTION form for each student. After your team has completed their self-reflection forms, find a team from another school. Each student will pair up with a student from another school and complete the PEER REFLECTION. You will keep these to use as feedback for your team as you continue to work on the project.
- Lunch will be served from 11:30-12:15. Grab lunch when it’s good for your team during this window.
- Please write thank you notes to our industry partners. (You have a few cards in your packet.) Be sure to write one to whomever worked with you today whether in person or virtually. You can turn these in at any time at the registration desk or to someone wearing a Promise2Purpose shirt.
- Before 12:45, please makes sure you upload a 1-minute video (one per team) that you’d be proud to post on the internet for a national audience connected to this project. Please make sure it includes:
- An quick introduction of your team. Include your school, team name, and individual student/educator names. If for some reason you have any doubts at all about a student’s ability to be photographed because they didn’t turn in the waiver, etc., please do not include the student in the video.
- Answer these questions:
- What did you learn today?
- Who did you talk to today? Make sure to include both your industry partner, as well as other schools.
- What did you learn that changed or improved the design of your prototype?
- How did you respond to expert advice?
Please UPLOAD VIDEO HERE before you get on the bus.
- Be packed up and ready to get on the bus at 12:55 p.m.
- Advisors: When you have a minute on the bus ride back to campus, please fill out this FEEDBACK FORM as part of continuous improvement to help make events like these better next time!
Thank you for reimagining learning for our students!
- Lunch is provided for both students and sponsors.
- There is not an additional challenge. The only project is a flood barrier to protect a small house.
Thank you for all your questions! One question that has been asked several times is about funding to purchase materials. We want to emphasize that this challenge requires very little in terms of physical materials. We want your students to use their imaginations to create in whatever physical or virtual form their solution takes. Students can animate, draw, Auto-CAD, video a solution. There does not have to be a PHYSICAL prototype. The design process is just as important as the prototype itself. The district has very limited funds, so be creative in your prototype solution! If you would like to apply for funding (not to exceed $25), use this form.
What should we do prior to the Day of Design?
- Complete the Flood Barrier 1 and 2 activities
- Create an account for JASON Learning, go to Monster Storms curriculum and and work through the following Missions: Mission 1- Profiling the Suspects, Mission 2 - The Plot Condenses, Mission 4 - The Hunt, Flying Into the Eye, Mission 5 - The Recovery, Living with Monster Storms, Lab 1- Risk Assessment, Lab 2-Storm Surge, Lab 3-Field Assignment, Build a Better Building
- Collect and keep with you field trip permission slip (English/Spanish ) and photo release form by December 7. Sponsors must attend this day with their team.
What are we doing on the day of design? Will we actually build something?
- Your prototype can be a drawing or something virtual. It does not have to be a physical product.
- With your team, discuss what worked well and what were some obstacles with the activity: Testing Flood Barrier Materials. Consider the research components from JASON Learning.
- Collaborate, map out, brainstorm your prototype ideas with your team. Propose new solutions to prevent a small house from flooding. Note: Water lab experiments will not be available on the Day of Design.
- As part of the team's Day of Design product, be prepared to share how teamwork impacted the design process, the team's expert from the Think Tank, how they came up with the design, and how they overcame obstacles to the prototype. Share how your team would market/communicate your prototype with community leaders, emergency responders, neighborhood HOA's and the Harris County Flood Control district.
- Create a script involving all team members for your one-minute video about your team design experience. Create your team video. We will tell you where to post.
What should we bring to the Day of Design?
- Technology -- There is limited access to additional technology. Please ensure that you bring tablets, laptops, iPads, etc. for your students, if you feel they will be necessary. There is also limited power, so be sure that your devices are fully charged. You might want to bring a power strip with you.
- Student and teacher cell phones are acceptable.
- Materials: Due to our extraordinary school response to the challenge, all teams are limited to materials that will fit in a standard size backpack.
Time: 9:30 am - 1:00 pm
Location: Klein Multipurpose Center OR Teaching and Learning Center (Louetta). You will be assigned to a location soon.
Transportation: We will have this information to you by Monday.
Lunch: We will provide lunch for students. Please plan to bring your own lunch if you have food allergies and are unable to eat the lunch provided.
What is our end product on the Day of Design?
Each team will record and submit a no longer than 1-minute video explaining their design process on the Day of Design.
Photo release / Field Trip permission -- Because we have so many students, all students must have a signed photo release on file. Please collect this form from your students and keep for your records. They will not be able to participate at the Day of Design if they do not have photo permission. Here are field trip permission forms (English/Spanish).
Can parents attend that day?
While we would love to have parents join us, both facilities will be at capacity due to the number of teams we have participating in the challenge. Please follow us on Twitter #kleinwaterwarriors.
What happens after the Day of Design?
You will have time to continue working on your prototype. On or before December 21, you will submit a Google Slidedeck, PowerPoint or video that explains your design thinking and prototype. FINAL RUBRIC
Test your prototype by following the lab in JASON - Testing the Flood Barrier Prototype
Industry Experts -- We are continuing to gather industry partners. We will have this list available by the Day of Design, and industry experts will be on hand at both the TLC and KMPC to work with teams. You will be able to contact these experts after the Day of Design as well. An extremely important part of Profile of a Learner is being grateful and kind. This is a great opportunity for our students to interact with adults in our community, and we want to ensure that our students are showing gratitude for their participation. When contacting industry experts, it is extremely important for students to use proper email, phone and video etiquette. And to send follow up thank you's. Here are some resources to help you get started, and your librarian will also be a great resource for digital etiquette.
