We offer AM and PM practice times for all students to attend a rehearsal once a week.
8:00 - 8:50 AM Wed and Thurs.
4:14 - 5:30 PM Wed and Thurs.
Drop Off and Pick up will be by the Band Hall door off the bus ramp.
PROSE - Selection must be from a published work which is in prosaic form, and must be read from a folder. Selections from plays are not acceptable. A memorized introduction which includes the title and author is mandatory. Excessive dramatics are discouraged. Maximum time limit is 7 minutes including introduction.
POETRY - Same as prose, except the selection must be poetic in nature.
READER'S THEATRE - Teams of 3 or more will perform selections from a published source. Selections must be read from manuscripts and should include an introduction stating title and author. No costumes and/or props may be used. Maximum time limit is 10 minutes.
*HUMOROUS - Selections from published plays, novels, short stories, or poems are acceptable. Selections must be memorized and must include an introduction stating the title and author. Selection must be humorous in nature. No props or costumes may be used. Maximum time limit is 10 minutes.
*DRAMATIC - Same as humorous, except the selection must be serious in nature.
*STORYTELLING - Selection must be from a children’s story or folk tale. All selections must be memorized. Maximum time limit is 5 minutes, including introduction. The selection should be appropriate for young children. Students are allowed to use a chair as a prop for this event.
*DUET ACTING - Selection must be from a published novel, play, short story, or poem. No props or costumes may be used other than two chairs. Scenes must be memorized and cannot be used by either contestant in another event. Maximum time limit is 10 minutes. There is no minimum time limit.
PANTOMIME - Contestants should prepare a pantomime routine for performance. Performances may be solo or duet. An introduction is optional but not required. Background music is optional. Any music or players needed will be the responsibility of the contestant. None will be provided. Maximum time limit is 5 minutes.
LIP SYNC - Teams of 1-5 persons will prepare in advance. Costumes and/or props will be allowed. Students must provide their own music and players. No speaking is allowed. A student may perform one solo lip sync and be part of one ensemble in this category. Maximum time limit is 5 minutes.
IMPROVISATION - Both solo and duet improvisation will include topics of phrases, words and/or objects. The student(s) will draw three choices, choose one, and have two minutes to prepare. The time limit for performance is five minutes. No props (other than two chairs) or notes will be allowed.
ORATORY - Orations must be the original work of the students. Speeches must be memorized, with no more than 10 percent directly quoted words. A copy of the manuscript must be available upon the request of the tournament director. Maximum time limit is 10 minutes.
EXTEMPORANEOUS - Contestants will draw three current events topics, select one, and prepare for 30 minutes. One note card will be allowed. Only published materials will be allowed in the draw room. Maximum time limit for speeches will be 7 minutes.
IMPROMPTU - Contestants will draw a topic and prepare a speech with 1-2 minutes of prep time. Speeches will be 5 minutes.
DECLAMATION—Contestants will memorize a published historical speech for presentation. Maximum time limit is 10 minutes.
CONGRESS--Congressional Debate is a legislative style of debate which focuses on a central set of legislation. Speakers will alternate sides in discussing the bills. We will use items from the TFA Fall Docket. Legislation can be found on the TFA website at www.txfa.org. Each tournament will decide on the docket prior to the tournament.
LD DEBATE—Format of 6-3-7-3-4-6-3 with 4 minutes cumulative prep time will be used. Topic will be the September/October or November/December NSDA topic.
PUBLIC FORUM—Format will follow National Speech and Debate Association rules, including coin toss, with 4 minute constructives, 3 minute crossfires, 2 minute summary, and 2 minute final focus. Prep time is 2 minutes per team. Topic will be the September/October or November/December NSDA topic.
*All team members must prepare one memorized piece: HI, DI, ST or DA.
