Beginning Band Supplies

We recommend renting your instrument from one of the local music stores. Many families choose a rent-to-own option, which means that the monthly rental payment is credited toward the purchase price of the instrument. This helps guarantee that your child will have a high quality, clean, and functional instrument to play on. This can include any maintenance and repairs that may be needed along the way. The music stores can also include in your rental bundle a “supply pack” for the beginning of the year that will include any accessory items and books we use for class. When you order online, the store will deliver the instrument and supplies directly to the school for you. You don’t even have to set foot outside your house!

Instrument - Oboe

• Instrument – students rent school-owned instruments, $50 per year – instruments will be checked out once school starts.

• 2 medium soft strength reeds (reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically)

Your Instrument is CLARINET!

The supplies needed are:

We recommend an all-wood clarinet.

• Recommended brands/models - Yamaha YCL 20, Yamaha YCL 450, Buffet E11

• One of the following mouthpieces (with ligature): Vandoren 5RV Lyre or Fobes Debut. Please make sure to get one of these specific mouthpieces with your instrument, as the “factory” mouthpieces can be difficult for a beginner to play on.

• Box of 10 Vandoren strength 2 ½ reeds. (Reeds will wear out and need to be replaced periodically.) As the clarinetist develops they will also need a harder strength reed.

• A cotton or silk pull-through swab (not felt).

• Other cleaning supplies – mouthpiece brush, polishing cloth & cork grease.

• A 4 reed capacity “Reed Guard”. (This helps SAVE your reeds and makes them last longer!)

• Metronome/Tuner (many students get an app for their device)

• Pencil (every day!)

Instrument - Bassoon – students rent school-owned instruments, $50 per year – instruments will be checked out once school starts. A cleaning swab will be provided with the instrument.

• Mouthpiece – Vandoen AL3 - Optimum Mouthpice OR Selmer C-star mouthpiece (with ligature). Please recommend this specific mouthpiece with your instrument, as other mouthpieces can be difficult for a beginner to play on.
