Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual week to raise awareness of mental health and mental health problems. It seeks to inspire action to promote the message of good mental health for everyone. Mental Health Awareness Week will take place from 04-08 September 2023 and is an event organized by the School Counselling Unit, PSHE Team, ICTISKL & PPMP. It's an opportunity for people to talk about all aspects of mental health, with a focus on providing awareness, help, and support.
The theme of the 2023 Mental Health Awareness Week is 'It Takes a Village'. This theme focuses on we all have mental health and mental health is everyone's matter. Together, we learn to tune in to self, tune in to others, and tune out stigma on mental health.
OBJECTIVES:
Raising awareness of mental health challenges and supporting good mental health.
Educating students and the school community about mental health.
Reducing stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging those experiencing challenges to seek help.
Increasing the ability to have engaging and supportive dialogue surrounding mental health.
Developing peer leadership for a more inclusive school culture.
Tuning In Means Being Present
It means being aware of what is happening within you, and in the world around you.
Tune In to Self
Tuning in to self can also mean identifying things that help or harm your own mental health.
What can I sense right now?
How do I feel right now?
What is going on inside of me?
How can I tune in to myself?
My Coping Ways
Tune In to Others
Tuning into others can build better understanding with people, enhance positive connections and extend helps to those around you.
Can you imagine what other people might be feeling and why?
Does someone you love seem a bit down?
Maybe you can head over and help them out with a chore or task, or just sit and have a casual chat.
Tune Out Stigma of Mental Health
Tune out stigma by considering the misconceptions, prejudice or barriers that you or others face regarding mental health and wellbeing. You can help increase understanding by making sure mental health and wellbeing are not taboo topics in your community, and letting others know if they are engaging in stigma-promoting behaviour.
How can I tune in to stigma?
Challenging negative ideas around mental health
Normalize talking about mental health and wellbeing
Avoiding terms that can stigmatize mental health
Engaging people with lived experience of mental ill-health as consultants
Speak out about stigma when you notice it
