Social Studies

In social studies class, fourth graders have been learning about Maine’s geography.  Students used several different maps to create their own “Map of Maine”.  They labeled the five map essentials, important towns, cities, mountains, rivers, lakes and products of Maine.

First Sled-able Recess!

After a long wait this winter season, the students finally had the opportunity to sled on the snow-covered playground. The anticipation and excitement were palpable as the students took their snow pants and sleds and raced down the hills, laughing and shouting as they went. The snow created a winter wonderland, and the sledding provided a thrilling and fun activity for the students to enjoy. The sled-able time at recess is a break from the routine and a time for the students to have fun and be active in the winter weather.

Author Visit

In January, the fifth graders had the opportunity to chat with author and blogger Afoma Umesi. She has a website devoted to reading for middle grades students. She talked with the students about all of the books she has already read and recommended some to them. They talked about what builds a good story to help the students relate great books that they have read to their writing. Students got to ask her questions via Zoom, as she is located in Nigeria. She told the kids some interesting behind-the-scenes details, such as how she receives advance copies of books to read.

Afoma’s website is readingmiddlegrade.com and it’s a great resource for parents and students!
