In Reception class the children are taught Maths using the Maths Mastery programme. Each lesson follows the same format and is made up of 6 parts. The children will have short, engaging inputs where new concepts are introduced, they will also have the opportunity to practise what they have learnt with a partner through 'Talk tasks.' After the main input children will take part in practical Maths activities and games where they can put into practise what they have learnt.
In Reception class the children are taught Phonics using the Read, Write, Inc programme. It is a fun and engaging way to learn how to read and the children love learning new sounds and the rhymes that help them remember them. They start to learn Phonemes and the corresponding graphemes in the Autumn term. From Christmas time the children are grouped carefully on their Phonic ability and are then taught Phonics in small groups, specific to their need.
In Reception class the children have short inputs and circle times which focus on the world around them and becoming familiar with it. Through discussions the children learn about the place that they live and gain an understanding of the things they can observe in their environment. Children are encouraged to look out for similarities and differences within their environment. Throughout the year the children will learn about a range of topics which encompasses these skills.
In Reception class the children learn Art skills through short inputs. During the first term at school the main focus is cutting skills, paint and using paint and paintbrushes effectively. Skills are modelled to children and they are then given a chance to practise themselves. Later in the year children are introduced to different materials, for example, chalks, pastels and can choose how they represent their ideas and what they use to do so.
Some direct teaching takes place in small, focused groups. Children are taught about healthy and unhealthy foods, the importance of personal hygiene and exercise through games, stories and sorting activities. Children learn to observe the effect exercise has on their bodies and begin to describe the changes they see and feel. They learn about plants and how they grow as well as where food comes from. Direct teaching is taught through topics.
In Reception class the children have short inputs and circle times which focus on past and present events, for example, Remembrance Sunday, the Gunpowder plot and Bonfire night. They learn about the differences and similarities with themselves and their families when they were children. Throughout the year the children will learn about a range of topics which support them in their understanding of change over time.
In Reception class specific skills are taught during our weekly PE sessions. Children are expected to dress and undress themselves ready for their lessons, this is something we teach in the first term of school, the children all get ready together, listening carefully to particular instructions, eg- take off your socks, take your shorts out of your bag.
The children are then taught skills such as balancing, ball skills, travelling and climbing. The skills are usually taught and modelled before children are encouraged to practise themselves.
