KIPP SoCal continually strives to use communication and instruction methods that best serve our students and families. We know that technology and online tools play an increasingly important role in these functions. KIPP SoCal wants to continue to embrace these technological advances but realize that not all families have the same access.
During our school closure that will start on March 16th, KIPP SoCal is committed to ensuring the continuity of teaching and learning for ALL students.
KIPP SoCal needed to determine the number of students who would not be able to do remote instruction from home if needed.
During the week of March 9th, we surveyed families and students, from five of our nineteen schools, across three of the communities we serve (East LA, South LA, and Southeast LA), and found that estimated:
10.8% of KIPP SoCal students DO NOT have access to a working computing device at all times (i.e. smartphone, laptop, iPad, etc.)
6.3% of of KIPP SoCal students DO NOT have access to reliable Internet home
In response to this, the Tech Team is working to order and deliver 1,500 qty Apple iPhones with 5G and 800 qty portable hotspots that is equipped with our CIPA-compliant web filtering to loan to our students, who do not have the tech access they need, the tools they need to continue learning virtually. Progress of this order will be updated regularly.
In the meantime, until the portable hotspots can be loaned out to our 6.3% of students without reliable Internet, our families can reach out to Charter Communication as they offering free Spectrum broadband and Wi-Fi access for 60 days to households with K-12 and/or college students who do not already have a Spectrum broadband subscription and at any service level up to 100 Mbps. To enroll call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households. More information can be found here.
For our KIPP SoCal team members who do not have reliable Internet access at home, please complete this form and we will order a portable hotspot and send to your designated address after we fulfill our student portable hotspot order.
