Our elementary mathematics program focuses on the use of concrete, real-life examples that are meaningful and memorable as an introduction to key mathematical concepts. Our Pre-K program uses a mutlisensory approach (TouchMath) focusing on beginning counting, number recognition, sorting, and classifying. At the K-5 level there is a large emphasis on the use of manipulatives followed by the use of pictorial representations of objects and concepts, and ultimately, abstract symbols. Students at this level will also learn to use multiple methods and problem-solving strategies to foster true proficiency and accommodate different learning styles. Throughout the year students will be repeatedly exposed to mathematical concepts and skills to develop their ability to recall knowledge from long-term memory. Through games and various applications students will also experience frequent practice of basic computation skills to build mastery of procedures and quick recall of facts.
Jump Start Math is a program offered by the Kinnelon Public School District for students to jump from having completed fifth grade math to an accelerated seventh grade math course in Pre-Algebra. Students in grade 5 identified as having consistently demonstrated a high level of mathematical ability, original thought, and motivation are eligible for acceptance into the program. Students successfully completing the program through high school have the opportunity to enroll in Advanced Placement Calculus BC during their junior year followed by Multivariable Calculus in their senior year.
