This annual tournament has become a firm fixture on our Water Polo calendar, and we are delighted to once again, be able to host you on our campus and in Makhanda.
I extend a special welcome to those who are joining us for the first time. This tournament honours Mr Brian Baker who was a passionate educationalist. He had a deep love of all sport but had a special place in his heart for Water Polo; there is no doubt that much of the success of girls’ Water Polo in South Africa can be attributed to this formidable man.
Brian was a keenly competitive person but promoted the philosophy that sport was never only about results, but that it offered valuable life lessons.
We continue to hold these beliefs close to our hearts and hope that our 2022 tournament will foster lifelong friendships, grit, determination and a genuine love for Water Polo.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Leon Grové
College Head
It gives me great pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to the players, coaching staff and visitors to this year’s Brian Baker 1st Girls Water Polo Festival. It really is fantastic that we are able to get back to playing some school sport, especially as we continue to navigate our way through the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
While appreciating the competitive nature of the festival, I would like to encourage every player to make the most of this opportunity to develop new relationships and networks. To every player my message is simple; play hard, play fair and enjoy your experience of being at this festival.
My sincere thanks go to all the teams represented here this weekend. I appreciate the commitment of both players and coaches in supporting and participating in this festival.
I would also like to extend my thanks to the many people who have been involved in the organisation of this festival. There have been many challenges to overcome in the lead up. To Ian Melliar, Cathy Vorster and all the Kingswood Water Polo staff-we say thank you.
