Kings Local School district requires students to earn a minimum of 50 service learning hours of which a maximum of 25 hours may be earned within the Kings Local School District and a minimum of 25 hours earned with a non-profit organization not connected to the Kings Local School District (students may earn all of their 50 hours with a non-profit not within KLSD). We encourage students to reach beyond the minimum requirements; all hours will be recorded at SchooLinks. Hours must be submitted within the month of service and properly documented and approved by the Community Service Coordinator.
Students who transfer into the high school will have these hours prorated by the year in which they transfer. Approximately ½ of the hours must be in a non-profit organization not connected to the Kings Local School District.
Freshman transfer 50 hours
Sophomore transfer 35 hours
Junior transfer 25 hours
Senior transfer 15 hours
The additional guidelines also apply:
There is no limit to the number of hours earned in a particular activity or with a particular group. However, if a student goes on an extended service-learning trip, a maximum of seven hours per day will be documented as service. If the student serves more than 7 hours per day, the student should include this in the description of the activity on their service resume at SchooLinks.
Community service will not be accepted when there is opportunity to earn money or other payment for services. (No work done for own group’s benefit, for the benefit of a profitable business or for an individual without sponsorship of a nonprofit agency.)
In-District community service hours may be earned during the school day only when occurring during a study hall and supervised by a Kings Local School District staff member or designated program coordinator, or when occurring as a service learning project as part of a curricular or co-curricular activity approved by the principal. (Teacher/Staff aides are not awarded hours.)
Parents may not be the supervisor for their own children. Another supervising adult must be listed in order for hours to be verified.
Community Service hours should be logged during the month served at SchooLinks and include a picture of the student performing the service.
