our Christingle making
After helping our Explorers Class to make their Christingles, Year 6 went back to class to make their own.
The children recalled what each part of the Christingle represented and signified.
We practiced passing the lit flames to each other around the room whilst rehearsing Silent Night.
Christingle making with explorers class
Year 6 worked with our Explorers class to help make their Christingles ahead of our whole-school Christingle Service on Thursday. It was lovely to see the oldest pupils in the school working with some of our youngest pupils.

DT - seasonality and culture - evaluating our products
After making our mince pies and quiches, we evaluated our products to see if they met our design specification.
We focused on their appearance, taste, texture and smell.
In their evaluations, the children identified what went well, what they would improve next time and what new skills they learnt as part of this learning.
DT - seasonality and culture - making our products
We enjoyed our DT day learning how to make shortcrust pastry. We learnt how to use the rubbing-in method to combine ingredients. Once we had made our pastry, use used cutters to create bases for mince pies and quiches.
Half of the bases were blind-baked whilst we cut, chopped and grated the fillings for our quiches. Once the bases were cooked, we added our quiche fillings and mincemeat to create tasty mince pies and quiches.
Different groups experimented with their mince pie tops including, traditional round tops, stars and lattice tops.
We added an egg and milk mixture to our quiches and brushed the mince pies with milk to give a golden finish before cooking all our final products before tasting and evaluating later in the afternoon.
MFL - Homes and Houses
Homes and Houses: In French this half term, the class have been focusing on learning nouns for rooms in the house and also objects in the house. They were very creative designing their own houses and labelling the different rooms. In the following session, they were designers again and drew furniture to create a bedroom in the style of Piet Mondrian.
Language Boosters: In the Spring Term, we are planning to set up each child with a log in for Language Boosters; a fun, engaging games app designed to reinforce classroom language learning. The children will be able to log in at home to use the app and boost their learning.

dt - seasonality and culture - product investigation
Our focus in DT this term is Food Technology. We will be learning about seasonality and culture. To begin, we mind-mapped the different sweet and savoury pastry products that we could think of. We then investigated different mince pies and evaluated these by thinking about their appearance, smell, texture and taste. We recorded our findings using tables and evaluation star graphs.
art - painting final compositions
We have been developing our water-colour painting skills this half-term. We have focused on being able to mix tones, tints and shades and have learnt how to build up our paintings, focusing on the background, foreground and middle ground. We looked carefully at perspective and proportion within our images. After researching images of our local area, we used our sketchbooks to develop our initial ideas, creating sketches to and painted our final pieces.
science - electrical circuits
In science this week, we have been exploring electrical circuits. The children generated questions that could be investigated e.g. What would happen to bulb brightness if you add more bulbs to a circuit? They thoroughly enjoyed combining the different components (wires, bulbs, cells, button and push switches, motors and buzzers) to create their circuits. It was great to hear them explaining what they observed using their scientific vocabulary.
PSHE - Universal rights of the child
In PSHE, we have been learning about our Human Rights and the Universal Rights of the Child.
art - watercolour
In Art, we have researched our local area and developed some initial sketches using our sketch books. We have begun to use watercolour paints to recreate these. We have focused on the background this week and will move on to the middle ground and foreground next week.
Take 10 - skipping
In Take 10 this term, we are developing our skipping skills. The children have been practicing their skipping standing still and on the move. They have developed their paired skipping and have been creating their own skipping games and routines.
children in need
On Friday, the children dressed up to raise money for Children In Need. It was fantastic to see their yellow, spotty & dotty and crazy hair styles for the occasion.
pe - athletics
In PE, we have been focusing on our running technique in athletics. We started by seeing how far we could run in 15 seconds. We gradually increased the time up to one minute and looked at how we had to alter our pace and breathing in order to run for longer, developing our stamina.
art - tints, shades and tones
To begin our painting unit in art, we have been learning about shades, tints and tones. We used water-colour paints and experimented with adding white and black to create different colours.
science colour filters
In science, we have been learning about seeing colours. We used our scientific prediction skills to identify what we thought would happen when we look at objects using various colour filters. We then undertook our investigation using our observation skills to gather our results.
art - using pastels to create courtroom art drawings
In art this half-term, we have ben studying the pastel drawings of Priscilla Coleman. We selected some of her artworks and used pastels to draw in her style, focusing particularly on scale, perspective and facial expression.
English - our own characters
In English, we have been studying the book 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. After completing some work on developing character and setting descriptions as well as identifying lots of different descriptive techniques, we have designed a new character who will enter the story. Next week, we will be writing a missing chapter from the story featuring our characters.
Science - colour spectrum
In Science, we have been learning about Isaac Newton and his discoveries of the colour spectrum. We have previously looked at how we can use a prism to separate light. This week, we created our own colour wheels and span these with the aim to create white light.
PE-Tag Rugby
This week in our Tag Rugby session the children focused on working as a defending unit to prevent attackers from scoring.
We began in groups of 4 and played 2 attackers against 2 defenders. If an attacker was tagged whilst trying to score then the game started again and teams switched roles.
This then developed into a 5 v 3 game where the attackers if tagged needed to pass the ball immediately.
Art - sketching like Priscilla Coleman
In art this week, we have been learning to sketch in the style of our focus artist Priscilla Coleman. We focused on proportions in our drawing and how to add shade. Next week, we are going to combine our mark-making skills using pastels and our sketching skills to create a piece of courtroom-style art in pastel.
year 6 roles and responsibilities
Our Year 6 roles and responsibilities have now been established. These roles allow the children to be active members of the wider school community and act as positive role models for all members of our Kingsacre family.
family group captains
Our Family Group Captains have been elected as part of a whole-school democratic election. After delivering excellent campaign speeches to their Family Groups and collating the votes, our new school leaders have been established.
playground leaders
Our playground leaders volunteer each day to lead active breaktime and lunchtime activities for the whole school to enjoy.
tech leaders
Our Tech Leaders work with staff across the school to support the teaching of Computing. They help with the organisation of devices throughout the school.
rainbow team
Our Rainbow Lanyard Team are always 'Here to Help!' at breaktimes and lunchtimes, As part of our Mental Health provision at Kingsacre, the team offer support to all children across the school.
Volleyball festival
Year 6 children from Kingsacre joined fellow Year 6's from Caen, Southmead and Marwood schools for the first of their transition sports festivals. The aim of this was for the children to meet other Year 6 children from local schools who they may meet when they transition to secondary school next September as well as to promote and enjoy a sport they may not have tried before. Thank you Caen Primary School for hosting this event.
Art - ceramics workshop
We were invited to take part in a ceramics workshop at West Buckland School. We discussed the significance of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance then all made two poppies out of clay. In the afternoon we were able to glaze some poppies that has already been fired in the kiln. The glaze looked pink when we painted it on but the heat of the kiln causes a chemical reaction with the glass in the glaze so our poppies will turn a deep red.
The poppies will be on show at West Buckland and will then go 'on tour'. Kingsacre will be first to host the installation for Remembrance next year - Autumn 2026. We can't wait to see the mound turned into a sea of ceramic poppies.
Thank you to West Buckland for an amazing day!
Art - wet and dry media
Wax Crayon
Chalk
Water-colour pencil
Oil Pastel
In art, we have been exploring how we can make marks with different media. We used wax crayons, chalk, oil pastels and water-colour pencils.
Science - reflection
In Science, the children have been learning about reflection. This built on their learning from the previous week where they discovered how light travels in straight lines. They set up a collaborative investigation using a mirror and cardboard with a small slit in it to observe light rays. They discovered that the angles of incidence and reflection are equal.
PE - Fitness
Wall Sits
Planks
Step-Ups
