Literacy - mark making
This week in literacy and physical development, the children have been exploring mark making using pencils, felt tips and paint. Some children were drawing the graphemes linked to our phonics focus.
Creative development
The children have been exploring self-portraits by looking closely in a mirror and drawing their faces using pencils and black pen. They carefully noticed where to place their features and worked hard to represent themselves. The results are warm, expressive, and very personal — a wonderful achievement for our 4-year-olds!
Literacy
Wonderful to see the children confidently picking up pens and pencils, taking their writing into continuous provision.
Creative Development
Our children have been learning all about Autumn including hedgehogs and were so excited to create their own hedgehog artwork using pastels . They looked carefully at leaves to include in their nests and explored lots of different colours to make the spines. Everyone worked so hard and felt very proud of their wonderful creations!
Understanding The World
We had a wonderful time celebrating our Harvest Festival with the Explorers and the Climbers! it was lovely to welcome parents to join us for this special occasion. The children sang some harvest songs and the Climbers proudly showed their autumn wands, which they had carefully created. The Explorers had made bread rolls and enjoyed talking about where our food comes from and how it grows. It was a joyful celebration of autumn, community and thankfulness!
understanding the world and creative development
EYFS enjoyed learning all about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot as we celebrated Bonfire night. Climbers enjoyed creating their own colourful firework prints using paint, exploring patterns, shapes and bright bursts of colour. The Explorers were fascinated to hear the story behind the celebration and loved talking about the fireworks they have seen. It was a fun, creative and exciting way to bring history to life through art and play!
Some of the Explorers drew pictures of Guy Fawkes after looking at paintings of him on the internet.
creative development, Communication and Language
Climbers and Explorers celebrated World Nursery Rhyme Week, exploring much loved rhymes including Sing a Song of Sixpence, Humpty Dumpty, When I Was One, I Hear Thunder and Two Little Dickie Birds. The children enjoyed singing and taking part in a range of activities linked to each one. Hearing and repeating rhymes is an important part of early learning - it helps children develop listening skills, language patterns, memory and phonological awareness, all of which support early reading and communication.
Literacy and Phonics
Explorers are beginning to write independently. They are using their growing phonic knowledge to sound out words, attempt simple sentences, and form letters correctly. Our aim is to build independence, confidence, and enjoyment so children feel proud of the marks and words they create.
Maths
In Reception, we've been developing the children's subitising skills - being able to recognise small quantities without counting. Each day, we talk together about what we can see and how we can see it. Rather than simply asking "How many?", we encourage the children to describe the patterns they notice.
Its been wonderful to see their confidence grow. Many children are now beginning to say things like, "I can see a three and another three, so I know that makes six." This shows a deepening understanding of number and how different amounts can be combined. We're really proud of the progress they're making and the enthusiasm they bring to their learning each day.

Christingle making
Year 6 worked with Explorers class to help make our Christingles ahead of our whole-school Christingle Service on Thursday. It was lovely to see the oldest pupils in the school working with some of our youngest pupils.
