Greetings Stingers,
My name is Kristen Zuberbier and I am the school counselor at Sunrise Elementary School AND one of the counselors at Kimberly's 4K Center for Literacy. I am frequently asked "what does a school counselor do" and "would you be able to help with _______ kind of problem." To help answer your questions I have put a brief description together about my role in our school.
School counselors are educators uniquely trained in child development, learning strategies, self management and social skills, who understand and promote success for today’s diverse students. Although school counselors are not licensed professional counselors, we do have experience with trauma and mental health needs. A school counselor coordinates a comprehensive program which includes lessons delivered to all classes, lessons available to smaller groups of students and individual students, first-response services for mental health concerns, and resources, support, or referrals for students, teachers, or families.
A comprehensive school counseling program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. The program teaches knowledge, attitudes and skills students need to acquire in academic, career and social/emotional development, which serve as the foundation for future success.
As a counselor, I am available, at times, to meet with you or your child to discuss concerns and create a plan to address issues like emotion management, educational barriers, access to services or resources, interpersonal relationships, or transitions. If you would like to request an meeting, please email Kristen Zuberbier. Keep in mind that I may not receive your request until the next day.
I look forward to meeting with you,
-Mrs. Z
