It is stated explicitly in the English Curriculum Framework: “Teachers must provide increased opportunities for silent reading with options for student choice.” (VDOE 2017) Teachers support independent reading by building book collections that appeal to a wide range of levels and interests, organizing these collections, and teaching routines that support purposeful use of this time. Furthermore, teachers must insure that independent reading is working for all students, not just those who have already developed personal reading habits. This requires conferencing and building relationships with students around text. Consult your colleagues, librarians, and reading specialists with concerns about independent reading materials, motivation, and management.
