Physical education will equip learners with the knowledge, understanding, skills and values to develop and maintain their performance in physical activities and understand the benefits to health, fitness and well-being.

Pupils studying this course will:
develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance
understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance in physical activity and sport
perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics, strategies and/ or compositional ideas
develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance in physical activity and sport
understand the contribution which physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and well-being
understand key socio-cultural influences which can affect people’s involvement in physical activity and sport
All pupils who opt for this course have an additional two hours of Physical Education per week. The practical element makes up 40% of the final mark and requires the pupils to demonstrate practical capabilities in three sports (2 individual and 1 team or vice-versa) from an approved list. They are also expected to demonstrate a working knowledge of the rules and regulations of these sports and be able to analyse and provide constructive feedback to other performers.
It is essential that anyone who chooses this course participates regularly in at least one activity (preferably two or three) out of school.
The theoretical component is worth 60% of the final mark. Pupils sit two external examinations based on their subject knowledge and understanding of the following topics:
Paper 1
Applied anatomy and physiology
Physical training
Paper 2
Socio-cultural influences
Sports Psychology
Health, fitness and well-being
This is a broad curriculum and an interest in sport and physical activity is required to keep up to date with the latest developments in this subject.
The GCSE course should be considered by those pupils seeking to study Physical Education at A-level and/or those pupils who wish to study a more sports science approach to physical education. The nature of the course and practical assessment requires pupils to be participating in sporting activity to a good standard on a regular basis, and preferably be competing in sport outside of school hours.
It is imperative that pupils speak to Miss Andrew or Mrs Sousa before filling in their options form, should they be interested in following PE GCSE or wish to discuss if they would be more suited to the Sport Studies OCR Cambridge National course. All pupils will be required to complete a sporting CV so that we help effectively guide pupils onto the correct course.

This course comprises a combination of practical and coursework based elements. It involves pupils in the process of looking at and experiencing sport from a variety of angles including investigating sports leadership, experiencing outdoor and adventurous activities and designing and implementing a training programme. This course develops pupils’ research, planning, analysing and evaluating skills as well as developing and improving their own practical abilities.
This course is assessed by a combination of practical assessments, written assignments and an external examination. The externally assessed examination unit makes up 25% of the overall grade with each of the three other units being equally weighted at 25% also.
All pupils who study this course will have an additional two hours of physical education per week. Students will study 4 different modules over two years. Each module is worth 25% of the final marks available.
Module 1: Social and Cultural Issues in Sport – This unit looks at the different social and cultural factors involved in the development of sport and physical activity such as barriers to participation, women in sport, drugs in sport and the Olympic Games. Pupils will sit an external examination based on their subject knowledge and understanding.
Module 2: Sports Leadership – This unit will develop the pupils’ understanding of leadership theory and leadership skills. Pupils will be assessed through a combination of written assignments and the practical delivery and evaluation of a coaching session.
Module 3: Developing Sports Skills – This unit will develop the pupils’ skills and performance in two different practical activities plus their ability to officiate one activity. Pupils will also be required to plan, implement and evaluate a training programme for a sport of their choice
Module 4: Outdoor Adventurous Activities – This unit will develop the pupils understanding of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities by taking part in a number of activities and studying how we ensure safe and positive outcomes. Pupils will be assessed through a combination of written assignments and practical performances.
The sports studies course should be considered by anyone wishing to develop their knowledge and understanding in physical education. Students will develop a range of written and practical skills that can be applied in a wide range of settings, including the sports and leisure industry. It is helpful if pupils are participating in regular physical activity and taking an interest in sport.
