Assistive technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, software program, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of persons with disabilities.
AT can be low-tech: communication boards made of cardboard or fuzzy felt or high-tech: special-purpose computers.
AT can be hardware: prosthetics, mounting systems, wheelchairs, walkers, braces, and positioning devices or computer hardware or software: special switches, keyboards, screen readers, eye gaze systems, communication programs, and pointing devices.
AT as part of UDL (Universal Design for Learning) can be inclusive learning materials and curriculum aids.
AT that is required to make progress can be identified as an accommodation
