is a college prep elective that is in its 21st year of implementation at North High. We consist of over 120 college prep students who were selected for the program based on desire, academic potential, economic need (for future college financial support), teacher or counselor recommendation, and an interview.
NHS AVID looks for students who have the desire and potential to attend a 4 year university straight out of high school, but might need a little help to be successful. North High AVID has graduated eighteen classes in the past 20 years (550+ students) helping students gain acceptance straight to four-year universities.
The goal of the class is to teach students the tools they will need to succeed in both high school and college so that they are able to graduate and go directly into a four-year university. Research indicates that 92% of students who participate in the AVID elective and utilize its teachings and support services will go directly to a four-year college or university.
The AVID class is a college-prep elective class that works on organizational skills, note-taking, test-taking strategies, SAT/ACT preparation, reading and writing, and college exposure and awareness. AVID students also receive tutorial assistance two days a week from college tutors to help them through any content area difficulties they may be having.
