About Applied Algebra: our class

Often in our class we discuss topics of the day-- COVID is sometimes a topic, as well as politics. I hold a degree in political science in addition to my teaching degree in basic level mathematics and I try to encourage the students to be civically minded and engaged in topics from the newspaper. I have discussions with students in regards to ALL sides of an argument across the political spectrum and encourage them to make their own decisions as to what they think is right. I have told them and will always reiterate that I am a member of NO POLITICAL PARTY (independent)

.........I hope that seeing ALL SIDES of any argument will help them form their own political and civic opinions.

CLASS norms

this is how we will conduct our class: the 7 Math Class Norms :

1- everyone can learn math

2- mistakes are valuable

3- questions are really important (and encouraged!)

4- math is about creativity and making sense of things

5- math is about connections and communication

6- math class is about LEARNING not performing

7- depth of understanding is WAY MORE IMPORTANT than speed

Social and Emotional LEARNING:

Something we are going to be working on EVERY DAY at some point in class is SEL (social/emotional learning). Every day, we will be learning something in regards to these types of topics. Sometimes it will be an interactive pear deck PPT assignment in google slides, other times you'll watch a short video and submit a paragraph in Canvas.
