Spotlight Resource: Exploring Climate Change Series
This three-lesson series engages high school students in a data-driven investigation of climate change, moving from analysis to modeling to action. In Lesson 1, students explore real greenhouse gas and temperature datasets to identify patterns and understand the mathematical story behind climate trends. In Lesson 2, they apply those insights by using Desmos to build mathematical models that project future temperature outcomes based on different emission-reduction scenarios. The series culminates in Lesson 3, where teams develop and present research-based climate policy proposals, using their graphs and data analysis to justify the projected impact of their plan on global temperatures. Together, the lessons position students as mathematical problem-solvers and informed decision-makers, using evidence to reason, model, communicate, and advocate for change.
