While searching for a suitable facility for our rapidly growing Keowee Krafters club, having outgrown the workspace available in Keowee Key, Tammy suggested that we talk to Lynne Martin, President of Eagles Nest Art Center. Once the center of the Salem/Tomassee area 1-12 education for generations of local residents and recently a charter School, the facility in Salem is now Eagle Nest Art Center a non profit headed by Lynne and Eddie Martin for the promotion of arts and music in the upstate. While touring the facility it became evident that this was a match of providence! The equipment left behind from the schools and available rooms were perfect for hosting a Makerspace and the facility was in need of some loving care. As a fortunate surprise there was a Glowforge Laser Cutter/Engraver and a Dremel 3D printer sitting neglected amongst the benches, desks, lab equipment and school books... the perfect start of a viable Makerspace. With a mutually advantageous agreement in place we set to work cleaning and equipping the rooms with the in-place and other donated items. Included in the equipment and facilities provided by ENAC are:
Glowforge Laser Cutter/Engraver
Dremel 3D printer
3 - 55" TV/Monitors
Numerous tables chairs and benches
Book cases
4 rooms with electrical utilities, HVAC and lighting
Washrooms and entry control
Thank you Lynne, Eddie and the ENAC board for seeing the potential in our joint venture in the enhancement of the arts and crafts in the community!!
Keith had heard about us through the predominant local social network: church. After a brief tour him mentioned in his understated manner "I might have some equipment for. A friend of mine, Larry, is retiring from wood working and wants to make sure his equipment goes to an appreciative person or cause." Well a few weeks later he shows up with a truck and trailer load of shop equipment donated by himself, Larry and Keith's son Andy. All in working order it doubled our existing equipment including a much needed dust collection system and the foundation of our wood turning station.
Equipment Donated:
Dust collection system
Jointer
Welder
Tabletop lathe
Multiple clamps and accessories
Power and hand tools
Thank You Keith!
Wells, our resident wood turning instructor who has taught at Greenville Woodworks Guild for many years, came to us early this spring and said "I can teach your wood turning classes". We responded "But we only have one lathe". A few days later he showed up with 2 new lathes and 3 gouge sets! This boosts our wood shop to the next level. With this generous donation and the original lathe form Keith we now can offer classes with 3 seats for beginning through advanced wood turning, including small bowls, pens and spindles (wood handles for kitchen utensils etc.). Thank You Wells!
Chris, our President, opened the woodshop at MakeKeowee with the donation of his home workshop equipment, collected over 50 years of wood working and metal fabrication in various forms from home renovation and tile installation to boat building (see photos) and early home built Hang Glider fabrication. Donations include:
Table saw with integrated router table
12" DeWalt Planer
Belt/disc sander
Power miter saw
Shop vacuum and attachments
Drill press and drill set
Hand and power tools
Assembly benches
Lutherie equipment and supplies
