English 9 is a two semester survey course designed to review language, vocabulary, and introduce students to the study of all areas of literature that will be further explored in grades 10 and 11. Writing is used throughout the course. Semester 1 focuses on fiction, including William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet whereas Semester 2 focuses on nonfiction, poetry, research paper, and speech.
This course is a thorough study of American and British Literature. There is a heavy emphasis on writing and essay-based assessments. In addition to the comprehensive literature program with an emphasis on all genres, students will receive formal instruction in speaking and writing utilizing grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary skills. This course is designed for students who plan on beginning the Advanced Placement Program immediately after the completion of this course.
