Fourth Graders are writers! They love to tell stories, and they show an increasing interest in writing about their interests and ideas. The Common Core Standards have elevated writing to equal importance with reading, acknowledging that the two skills support each other and are essential to the development of critical thinkers and strong communicators. We begin the Fourth Grade year with narrative writing, encouraging students to write realistic fiction stories. We will also review the fundamentals of paragraph writing with our students. This includes remembering to include a title, topic sentence, supporting details, conclusions, and transition words/phrases. Throughout the school year we also focus on informational writing strategies and persuasive writing. Along this journey, students will explore poetry and a variety of genres within the narrative, informative, and persuasive categories of writing.
Writing is included in the Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) units in 4th grade.
