Our Third Grade reading program follows the Lucy Calkins Readers Workshop model. Our instruction focuses on fluency, decoding, and expression, as well as deepening reading comprehension through books on each individual's reading level. In third grade we want the children to develop a love of learning where they read in order to learn.
Key reading comprehension strategies are as follows: making connections (text-to-self, text-to-text, text-to-world), visualizing, predicting, questioning, summarizing, inferring, analyzing characters, and plot structure. We incorporate interactive read alouds throughout the school year: Stone Fox and Because of Winn-Dixie.
