Our Third Grade reading incorporates parts of the Lucy Calkins Readers Workshop model, as well as guided reading, and word study. Our instruction focuses on fluency, decoding, and expression, with a big focus on deepening reading comprehension. Students will read a variety of books on their individual reading level, and they will also experience book clubs with guided reading instruction. In third grade we want the children to develop a love of learning where they read in order to learn.
Key reading comprehension strategies are as follows: making connections (text-to-self, text-to-text, text-to-world), visualizing, predicting, questioning, summarizing, inferring, analyzing characters, and plot structure. We incorporate interactive read alouds throughout the school year such as Indian Shoes and Because of Winn-Dixie.
