It is our goal for all of our Third Grade mathematicians to be critical thinkers that are comfortable using numbers in their everyday lives. We implement the California State Standards using the Eureka Math Program. These standards incorporate implementing the units of study with a math programs based on the following:

1. Focus: A greater focus on fewer topics
2. Coherence: Linking topics and thinking across the grades
3. Rigor: Pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skills, and fluency, and application with equal intensity

The content standards in Third Grade include the following Eureka Math units of study:

• Properties of Multiplication and Division Solving Problems with Units of 2, 5, and 10
• Place Value and Problem Solving with Units of Measure
• Multiplication and Division with Units of 0,1, 6 - 9, and Multiples of 10
• Multiplication and Area
• Fractions as Numbers on a Number Line
• Collecting and Displaying Data
• Geometry and Measurement Word Problems.

Students work individually, in small groups, as well as in whole class situations and we focus on differentiating for all student levels. Each week, the students do math centers, have math homework, and need to be practicing the math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). The expectation this year is for Third Graders to memorize all addition and subtraction facts up to 20 and multiplication and division facts up to 10. In developing critical mathematical thinkers, we focus on the following Standards for Mathematical Practice:

• Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
• Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
• Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
• Model with mathematics.
• Use appropriate tools strategically.
• Attend to precision.
• Look for and make use of structure.
• Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
