5th Grade Reading

The 5th reading class explores reading organization of fiction and non-fiction through reading short stories, articles and novels. Student begin reinforcing their opinion of concepts such as theme and character change in written work. The students begin the year exploring types of genres and figurative language and continue to apply their learning to novels throughout the second part of the year. The 5th grade reading curriculum is in alignment with Common Core standards.

6th Grade Language Arts

6th grade language arts students are expected to build new knowledge on previously learned grammar and spelling concepts. They improve their writing skills learned in grade 5 by exploring word choice, use of citations, descriptive word choice and other various writing techniques. Students peer edit to assist other students with revising and editing. Students discover expository writing tied to content area classes. The concept of expository writing is merged with reading class. Students are expected to use writing skills learned to respond to literature. The 6th grade language arts curriculum is in alignment with the Common Core standards.

6th Grade Reading

6th Grade reading begins the year analyzing various forms of literature. This includes author's craft, theme and character change. Concepts learned in the first unit tie to an independent book unit that involves Nutmeg award winners.

Students are engaged in learning about various genres. Students study the Great Depression era using documentaries, non-fiction and fiction. Because of today's world, we are able to explore some text to world connections. Students are also very excited when we begin the Greek mythology unit and discover themes, allusions and characters that we see in the world around us and current literature which are tied to ancient Greece.

Students discover that literacy comes in many different forms.

The 6th grade reading curriculum is in alignment with the Common Core standards.

Students are involved in both whole group

and small group instruction, and individual choice.

Recently we have implemented the use of Chromebooks in the classroom. Students use Chromebooks for various reasons.

Some students use Chromebooks for word processing, vocabulary reinforcement, and grammar exploration.

During reading students are using Chromebooks to create a presentation assessment.
