My role: Application Designer
Challenges: Throughout the process it was discovered why other companies had likely not tackled this issue. It takes many screens and a large amount of planning, which eventually leads to coding to solve this problem. At one point I had almost 400 screens in my prototype. I was able to scale back the prototype to less than 100 screens, but this application just by its shear function was a large task. This is potentially why schools use multiple applications because each application specializes in a specific area such as grade, PBIS, parent communication or classroom assignments. Originally I made a pop up tab for each of the footer menu, which led to hundreds of screens. This made me change my approach to having the footer navigation lead to a page with the classes list for that particular item (classes or PBIS). If other companies were to create this type of application they would need experience with all of the applications that teachers are using to understand what functions are useful to incorporate. It would be user research heavy at the beginning of the project to find out what is truly needed.
Project timelines: 7 weeks
Problem: Teachers are required to use multiple applications throughout one day. This includes recording events, behaviors, messages and attendance. The goal was to simplify the process and combine all of the features of the three main applications educators are required to use.
SchoolTalk was developed as a place to contain school grades and documentation within one area. It creates easy grade entry, report card printing and grade retrieval. Users are able to quickly and easily sign-in and sign-out to enter student information and contact parents. Users are able to create unique labels for classes, create seating charts and take attendance. Users can decide when information is posted for student's guardians to view. Access student behavior reports and receive emails from the school all in one location. The goal of the application and desktop versions are to put all of the student information and contact in one location. This helps administrators, teachers and parents track student progress and track contact between all parties. This program also allows for all parties to communicate with each other and keeps all of the information in one area.
SchoolTalk is planned to be geared toward administrators, teachers, but to also include parents' applications at a later date. The applications will be used to keep all grades and communications within one application for all involved. Teachers are able to quickly find a class through being able to rename their classes, enter and publish student grades. SchoolTalk currently allows users to have access to all the current application features they are being asked to use in one program versus the five or more they are currently being asked to use and check daily. Teachers and administrators are able to log all student behaviors, as well as communicate with parents. It is compatible with both iOS and Android mobile operating systems. SchoolTalk is being designed to simplify school communication. All school information will be located in one location, which prevents users of both school employees from needing to search multiple locations for school related information and communication. This will create a more consistent behavior plan due to documentation being located in one central location. With current applications and software teachers are asked to keep information in multiple locations, which leads to multiple applications open at once. As well as unnecessarily copying information to multiple programs for documentation.

Learning Points: Previously I did not have much experience with using Adobe XD to create a prototype. I have learned many of the features Adobe XD offers and the best practices with using these features. I have learned that it is easiest to copy screens within the prototype screen when the screen connections are already built. By doing this saves time rebuilding those connections in the new screen that is being created. The interactive features were new to me as well. I learned how to make the screens scroll. When I am passionate about a project, I enjoy working on it and trying to get it to function perfectly. This project was very near to me as a current teacher. I know how much it would truly help teachers if it were to come to fruition, which was a major driving force for me to get it as user friendly as I could.
