A Higher Education Professional - He/Him/His
"Let's say you work at a university or a college. You are a cog in one of the great inequality producing machines this country has ever known. What are you doing to change that?"
- David Brooks - The Education Gap - New York Times - 2005 -
My name is Mark Barrow. I am graduate student in Kent State University's Higher Education Administration program. I currently serve as a Graduate Assistant Advisor in the Vacca Office of Student Services within the College of Education, Health, and Human Services at Kent State University.
I have a student centered mindset, with the goal of empowering as many students as I can to help them break down any perceived, or actual barriers in their lives to achieve their goals. In the words of Tinto, I look to perform within the mindset of providing the support to an access, to make that access a full opportunity (Tinto, 2008).
Some think a successful student is one that persists and completes their degree in a reasonable amount of time. While that is the technical, evaluative definition of student success, I am of the thought that as long as a student discovers who they are, what they want to achieve, and are satisfied with themselves while seeking these things in college, said student will realize true success.
