Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) are fundamental values that have been important for public libraries for years. It is important now more than ever for public libraries to continue to embody these values by continually providing staff DEIB training opportunities that will help create DEIB collections and programs that better reflect the library’s entire community. At the Dayton Metro Library, I take a biannual DEIB training where I continually learn how to provide better service to my staff and our patrons. As the Acquisitions Manager of the Dayton Metro Library, I have also worked with international vendors to purchase DEIB materials to help more of our community feel reflected in our collection. I hope to continue to take DEIB training and purchase DEIB materials to provide better services to Dayton – both internally and externally.
Public libraries serve as a safe haven for communities. In order to continue to be a welcoming institution for all, the Dayton Metro Library must continue to work with staff and community members to learn how to improve its collection and services. I look forward to utilizing my DEIB knowledge and working diligently to continue to provide a safe haven to the entire Dayton community.
