Types of Activities

We schedule 2-3 activities each month. Some activities are conceptualized and organized by Generations Connect, while some are organized by the long-term care communities we partner with. Students can choose which activities they would like to volunteer for based on their interests and availability.

Example: In Fall, we have worked with residents at Danbury Senior Living to decorate a Christmas tree that gets donated to Akron Children’s Hospital for their Annual Tree Festival. The festival featured 156 trees last year, and each tree got purchased, with all proceeds going directly to the hospital. 

Example: Our Culture Talks give students an opportunity to share their culture and traditions with older adults in the community. Students have led interactive conversations about countries including Rwanda, Nigeria, Kenya, Nepal, India, Puerto Rico, and El Salvador, sharing everything from food, music, clothing, and celebrations to everyday life and family traditions. The talks are informal and conversational, giving residents opportunities to ask questions, share their own experiences, and learn about cultures they may not have encountered before.
