Second-hand Shopping in the Akron Area

Lets talk about thrift shopping - its become insanely popular in the past few years, whether you're looking for vintage pieces, cheaper clothes or being environmentally conscious. Thrift stores aren't only limited to clothing though, with many offering kitchenware, decorations, blankets and vintage or retro media.

Since many of you are in Northeast Ohio, and I am a student at Kent State, I figured I would give some highlights for second hand shopping in the Greater Akron area. From flea markets to Goodwill and thrift stores, theres something out there for everyone.

Village Discount Outlet - 2930 State Rd, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223

Village Discount is a favorite among both students and residents in the Greater Akron area. They have two locations, one in Akron and another in Cuyahoga Falls, but most agree that the latter has a superior selection. This store has daily deals, with two tag colors being 50% off no matter the cost. There are, however, some pieces that are excluded from this tagging system, such as designer pieces, fur coats and cowboy boots, meaning they will never go on sale. The biggest downside to Village Discount is not having a dressing room, meaning you have to be able to try it on in the aisle or buy without knowing.

Hartville Thrift Shoppe - 938 W Maple St, Hartville, OH 44632

This location is a spot better known by locals than students, meaning the prices are still reasonable and the selection is strong. Just like Village Discount, Hartville Thrift has a color that is 50% off each day. There is a massive section for clothing and accessories, followed by glassware, dishes, decorations and craft supplies. Hartville Thrift also has a downstairs warehouse style room full of furniture and home decor.

Highland Throwbacks - 777 W Market St Suite C-5, Akron, OH 44303

Locally owned Highland Throwbacks features a variety of curated garments, particularly focusing on street style and 1990s fashion. This vintage store features a variety of articles of clothing, with a particularly stunning display of hats and baseball caps. Hats aren't the only thing this shop specializes in, as there are a variety of Ohio sports jackets, tops and jerseys from numerous teams across a variety of sports - although the majority will be featuring the Browns or the Buckeyes.

Streetsboro Flea Market - 1513 OH-303, Streetsboro, OH 44241

Streetsboro Flea Market is more catered to someone who loves furniture and knick-knacks, with numerous stalls and vendors selling unique items. You can find every niche within this indoor flea market, whether it be clothing and accessories or fishing. Some items here are labelled with prices while others must be inquired about, giving the opportunity to negotiate a price.

Goodwill - 1230 N Main St, North Canton, OH 44720

Goodwill Industries can be found all across the country, but the best on I have found in the Greater Akron region is the one in North Canton. Although prices are all over the place, there are many great deals if you know where to look. In particular, glassware and dishes were incredibly well priced here, even when compared to neighboring Goodwill stores.

The Bomb Shelter - 923 Bank St, Akron, OH 44305

The Bomb Shelter is definetly more of a vintage store than a thrift store, with pieces carefully selected from the 1950s to the 1980s. A typical shopper at the Bomb Shelter has a love for all things maximalist, finding unique clothes and furniture from decades past.
