Pronunciation of English words can be one of the most challenging parts of learning to speak the language. Unlike Spanish and other languages, English is not a phonetic language and many letters and letter combinations in English can have several different sounds.
While we will not cover all pronunciation rules in this mini-lesson, you will learn some tips that will help you pronounce English words better. Understanding the concepts presented in this lesson will help you become more confident in English pronunciation.

Hi, I'm Clay, creator of this course and owner of Kennedy Language Academy. In this lesson, you will learn the names of the English vowels.
In this lesson, we will learn the names of the English vowels. Notice that the letter Y sometimes works as a vowel and sometimes as a consonant.
Listen and repeat the names of the English vowels. I suggest that you repeat each vowel at least five times so can get used to its pronunciation. Watch the video as many times as needed to correctly pronounce each vowel.
The vowels in English are A, E, I, O, U and sometimes Y.
Now you know the names of the English vowels.

The letter A has 4 sounds
When you're speaking American English, the letter A can have one of 3 sounds; /ae/ as in Black, /ey/ as in Gray, or /ɑ/ as in cat. I'm not including schwa in this list, but it's important. Any vowel can sound like a schwa when it's not stressed.

The letter E has 3 sounds in English and.. Long E, Short E, and shwa. If the e is the last letter of a word it is totally silent. We do not pronounce the letter e if it is the last letter of a word.

The letter “y” also has two vowel sounds. Typically, in a one syllable word the “y” at the end of the word makes the long “i” sound as in the following words: cry, fry, try. Typically, in a two syllable word, the “y” at the end of the word makes a long “e” sound as in baby and city.
