Low/No Tech Ideas

Puzzle Maker

Get a white sheet of paper and create a picture of whatever you want. Color it in completely with either crayons or colored pencils. Then turn it over and draw out puzzle pieces on the back. Remember not to make too many pieces really small, or it might be too hard to put back together. Last, put them all in a Ziplock bag and ask someone from home to do your puzzle.

Build a Tower

Design and build a tower as tall as your waist that can hold a basketball. Write down your plan, materials you plan to use from around the house, and draw your blueprint. Create and try it out! Reflect and then try again and see if you can make it stronger. What worked and what didn’t? Some material ideas from home are magazines or newspapers, paper towel or toilet paper rolls, tape, LEGOs, blocks, pillows, etc. HERE is a document you can print out, or you can use your own paper.

Drawing Starts

Start by drawing any kind of line anywhere on your paper. It could be zig-zag, loops, straight, a combination. Now turn your line into artwork by creating an object or scene. You and your family can take turns for who draws the starting line and who finishes the drawing.

Parachute

MATERIALS NEEDED: Stuffed animal or small toy • Tape • Scissors • Objects found around the house or classroom • String • Plastic bags

The challenge is to safely parachute a stuffed animal (or another toy of your choice). With a parent’s permission, scour the recycle bin, junk drawer and garage for items you can use to construct your parachute. Old clothes and grocery bags are great items, but don’t stop there. What items can you upcycle to build a parachute? When everyone has finished, have an adult safely stand on a high space (such as a stairwell, the top of the slide at the park or launch from a window) and gently toss your creations. Have your family countdown from 10 as you launch the parachutes. Cheer when your toy lands slowly and safely. Make modifications and retest to improve the safety of the landing as many times as needed!
