A School Counselor is a trusted adult who students can come talk to if they are having a hard time. The main job of a School Counselor is to make sure that all students are safe, happy and feel connected to their school community.
School Counselors can help kids if/when students are:
having a hard time controlling their emotions/feelings
experiencing problems with peers and/or friends
have things going on at home that make it hard to focus in class
feeling stressed/overwhelmed about school
need help organizing, managing their time, etc.
experiencing being bullied or know someone who is bullying/being a bully
need help learning how to problem solve conflicts with friends
opening their minds to their future and exploring careers
helping with transitions
facilitating small groups such as grief & loss, divorce, motivation, study skills, friendship skills, anger management skills etc.
teaching classroom counseling lessons on perseverance, growth mindset, friendship skills, career exploration, preparing for middle school
attendance help and mediations
getting families help for the holidays
feeling safe at home and at school
scheduling classes and coordinating state testing
...and all kinds of other things!
