Study Skills

Study Skills is a course designed to reinforce and build upon the student's previously learned organizational, study, test taking, and advocacy skills. Specific IEP goals and objectives for each student are integrated into the framework of this class as well. Students will work on individual and group skills to enhance their learning, and they will be asked to develop their own personal goals each quarter. The main objectives for this course are: IEP implementation; learning style recognition; development of learning and coping strategies; organization and time management; self-advocacy skills; collaboration with staff and peers; and increasing independence.

There is no assigned homework for this course.

It is expected that students will independently participate in out-of-school transition activities:

I. Practice Self-Advocacy Skills (communicate with regular education teachers regarding classwork/homework assignments, support for assessment re-takes, and after school help arrangements).

II. Practice employment related skills: communicate with peers and adults regarding co-curricular activities/volunteer situations/employment, complete job applications, create resume, read 'help wanted' ads, become employed.

III. Discuss post-secondary goals with parents and begin the college/training search via online resources, visiting colleges/training schools, attending college fairs and/or visit sites for technical training.

IV. Develop a plan to use school and community resources once exited from special education services at the conclusion of the senior year.

V. Independently meet with guidance to review high school goals (to include scheduling, vocational programming, and long term post secondary planning)
