Computing Competency-Based Grades - Competency-based grades are not an average across the marking period. Instead, student scores on each Learning Target represent a trend of each student’s most recent level of competence as demonstrated by a body of evidence. This practice allows for reassessment where students can remediate their learning and retake an assessment to demonstrate their learning. A progression of assessment is used to build a body of evidence and allow students the opportunity to demonstrate their growth towards competency on increasingly complex tasks and varied contexts.
While important to the learning process, practice (homework), work completion, participation, extra credit, and effort are not included in the calculation of content competency-based grades. Ongoing feedback on student Habits of Mind is provided on assessments, progress reports, and report cards.
The final score of each learning target is calculated using the mode of up to the most recent three assessments to emphasize a student’s progression of growth and learning over time. A final grade for each competency is the average of the learning targets. However, to be considered as demonstrating competency, a student must earn a two or higher on each learning target. To be considered passing a course, students must demonstrate a two or higher on each competency. There are no overall course grades or GPA.
CBE Grades
4 - The student actively builds new knowledge, transfers skills, and expands their thinking in new and novel contexts.
3 - The student applies learned knowledge and skills in a variety of familiar contexts.
2 - The student is beginning to apply learned knowledge and skills in limited familiar contexts.
1 - The student is beginning to develop a basic understanding of the knowledge and skills
NE/0 - No Evidence - The student has not demonstrated sufficient evidence of learning to receive feedback.
IN - Incomplete - The student has been given extended time to demonstrate their learning due to excused reasons.
KRMS Habits of Mind - The KRMS Habits of Mind are competencies which describe the attributes KRMS students develop to become successful learners. Each of the three habits, respect, responsibility, and resilience, is tied to traits of the KRMS Learner. Habits of Mind must be included in each unit through direct instruction, assessment, and feedback to students.
Practice Work - is not graded and cannot be reassessed. Students will receive feedback on late practice work up to 7 calendar days from the due date but it will be noted as late in PowerSchool and reflected in the Habits of Mind. However, completion of incomplete or missing practice work may be included as part of a Remediation Plan
Due Dates - are communicated ahead of time to students. Due dates are an important component of the learning process and help students learn and demonstrate the KRMS Habits of Mind - respect, responsibility, and resilience.
Progress Reports - Parents/guardians are encouraged to monitor PowerSchool throughout the semester to stay up to date with their child’s learning. Progress reports, in the form of a reminder to parents to check PowerSchool, are sent two times each semester.
Report Cards - report cards will be issued at the end of each semester.
