Why is KRMS moving away from traditional grades (A - F)?
KRMS staff has engaged in several years of professional learning on the topics of CBE and grading practices. Studies show that CBE grading systems promote deeper learning for students through responsive, actionable feedback from their teachers based on specific learning targets. A CBE grading system focuses on the actual learning that students demonstrate (learning targets) and not the accumulation of points (a 91 vs. and 88). For example, feedback for non-academic behaviors (turning in work on time, working collaboratively, etc.) is provided through the KRMS Habits of Mind and grades will not be inflated by artificial measures such as extra credit.
How is CBE different at the middle school level?
As a middle school, our emphasis is on individual growth. You will see practices such as grade calculation focus on the process of learning. For example, by using the most recent mode (last four) assessments, a mode-based grade demonstrates the students growth and actual achievement towards meeting the learning targets and competencies. This developmentally appropriate approach is supported by the research and considered best practice for middle schools.
How does CBE address the needs of students with different learning styles or needs? How is it equitable?
CBE is designed to be flexible and personalized; allowing for different instructional methods, paces and supports to meet the diverse needs of students. CBE is designed to meet students where they are and build on that. CBE’s flexibility, focus on mastery, and commitment to personalized learning create a more equitable educational experience for all students. By allowing students the opportunity to relearn, providing targeted support, and emphasizing transparency, CBE aims to reduce disparities and ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.
How will the change to competency-based grading affect my child’s application to private school?
Many middle schools across the state and country have or are making the change to competency-based grading, including some private schools. Private schools are well-versed in understanding varied grade systems to make enrollment decisions. In fact, changing to a competency-based system may benefit students in the application process because CBE is widely considered as the best model of education, allowing students the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in authentic contexts.
What if my child falls behind?
The KRMS CBE model provides opportunities within the curriculum for students to catch up with work, relearn, and remediate. Students have the opportunity to work with their teachers during Flex blocks. As described in the Relearning and Reassessing section, students are not penalized for taking extra time or reattempts, as long as they have made a reasonable effort and communicated with their teacher.
