Math Department Remediation Policy
Remediation applies to summative assessments only. As formative assessments only serve the purpose of providing feedback during the learning process, occur far more frequently than summative assessments, remediating formative assessments is unnecessary.
The remediation process for a summative assessment should be an agreed upon process with input from both the student and the teacher. The purpose of remediation is to deepen the student’s understanding of the material being assessed.
Students may remediate summative assessments to demonstrate a deeper level of understanding, provided the following conditions have been met:
1. Students made an honest, good-faith effort to complete the original assessment to the best of their ability.
○ Turning in a blank, unattempted assessment does not constitute an honest, good-faith attempt. A meeting will be required to address this assessment. After the meeting, the teacher reserves the right to enter a ZERO (0) in PowerSchool.
2. Students can provide sufficient, tangible evidence that a good-faith effort to learn the material has taken place PRIOR TO the initial summative assessment.
○ Tangible evidence may include (but isn’t limited to) all formative work completed or reasonably attempted including; homework/classwork, completed class notes, and/or documentation of extra help from the teacher and/or tutors.
3. Students initiate the remediation process within one week of receiving the physical assessment back from the teacher. Any remediation and retake process must be completed in an agreed upon timeframe between teacher and student.
Teachers also reserve the right to offer alternate assessments for remediation that may differ in format from the original assessment.
AP level classes can reserve the right to eliminate remediation opportunities entirely as the course progresses toward the AP test.
