Students in 5K-5th grade visit the library once per week as a class. During their visit, they are encouraged to self-select "just right" books by previewing books they are interested in to ensure that they can read them independently. The number of books that students may check out at a time vary based on their grade levels:
5K: 1 book
1st-5th: 2 books
Books are overdue after 2 weeks but can be renewed. If a book is overdue, nothing else may be checked out until the book is returned. Overdue notices will occasionally be sent home. We do not charge fines for overdue books but do charge replacement fees for lost or damaged books.
Books are automatically marked lost once they are six weeks overdue. Returning the books in good condition will remove lost fines.
If a book has been significantly damaged or is lost, library staff will send home a notice with the cost of the book to be replaced. The exact cost should be remitted to the library in cash or a check made out to WES. This is to ensure that the library-bound edition can be ordered by the librarian for replacement. Library-bound editions are specifically made to hold up to heavy circulation and this is reflected in their cost.
If a "lost" book is found after fines are paid, we are not able to refund the fine. You may choose to donate that book back to the library or keep the book.
The behavior policy enforced in the library media center aligns with the WES school-wide expectations. Students are encouraged to be good listeners, kind to books, and respectful of others in the library. Students who follow or exceed expectations are rewarded with Class Dojo points. Students who fail to meet behavior expectations may receive warnings, "needs-work" interactions on Class Dojo, or temporary loss of library check out privileges.
