Homework is your child's chance to practice what they learn in class. There are four things we expect from homework.
1. Independent Reading - Your child is expected to read every night. I will provide resources and they are encouraged to also read books of their choice. Please set a timer and have them read as guided below. They can begin by reading with you but later need to read alone.
1st 9 weeks - 5-10 minutes
2nd 9 weeks - 10-15 minutes
3rd 9 weeks - 15-20 minutes
4th 9 weeks - 20 minutes
2. Writing - Your child should write in a journal every night. They should write at least one sentence. This is a reflection about the book or books they are reading. Writing practice is extremely important and every child should write every night. Journals are not graded but are a great way for families to see growth over time in their child's work. Good writers can read, but all readers may not be able to write. I want great readers, so I also need them to be great writers.
3. Math - Practice counting to 120, math facts (basic addition and subtraction within 20), counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's, counting on from any number, and recognizing number words one to twenty.
3. ELA - Spelling practice is a focus on the pattern and not necessarily the word itself. You will get more information about this as we begin the school year. Sight word practice is also a great way to build reading skills. The more your child practices reading new words, the better they will be able to read.
4. ClassDojo Portfolio - Your student will occasionally have activities assigned in ClassDojo Portfolio. You will find out more about this later.
EXTRA PRACTICE: Blast Off to Reading - See directions below.
Read at least one passage every night. Don't forget to use a timer and only read for one minute to see how many words you can read. After one minute write the number of words you read at the bottom of the page. Read through all the passages and then start over and read it again to see if you can read more words per minute.
