School Schedule

Throughout the pandemic, our objective as a school has always been, and continues to be, creating the safest school environment for students and staff.

Plan in Case of School Closure

Should there be a directive to close the school, or a part thereof, the same timetable for in-school learning will generally be followed for At-Home learning. Details of the school day will be communicated by teachers on Google Classroom for Junior School students and Schoology for Senior School students.

School Schedule

Junior School:

The school day at the Junior School begins at 8:40 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m. Students in JK - Grade 8 enter their designated doors between 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and are dismissed at the same doors between 3:20 p.m. and 3:35 p.m. The image below indicates the location of doors by grade.

Senior School:

First period at the Senior School begins at 8:50 a.m. (M, Tu, Th, F) or 9:30 (W) and last period ends at 3:30 p.m. The Senior School will be open and students will be allowed to arrive from 7:30 a.m. each morning except on Late-Start Wednesdays, in which they can enter from 9:00 a.m. Students should arrive no later than 10 minutes in advance of first period so they can be screened and ready for class.

Students will be dismissed at 3:30 p.m. each day unless they are staying for clubs or Study Hall.

Entry and Dismissal Process

KCS follows a staggered entry and dismissal process as part of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This process helps us to manage the number of students at each entry and exit, as well as the number travelling through our halls. It also helps us manage our daily Thrive screening process.

Staggered Entry

Each morning, parents need to complete the screening process using the Thrive Screening app for each of their children. Only students who have been cleared in this process will be allowed to enter.

Supervising teachers are assigned to each door. Entry takes place between 8:15 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. each school day. Children with last names beginning in A to L are asked to arrive at 8:15, while those with last names beginning in M to Z are asked to arrive at 8:30. Parents who need to drop off their children in the time slot not assigned to them are allowed to do so, though we appreciate everyone’s efforts to arrive in these windows of time to help us minimize congestion.

Staggered Dismissal

Supervising teachers are assigned to each door. Staggered dismissal is between 3:20 p.m. and 3:35 p.m. Children with last names ending in A to L are dismissed from their assigned door at 3:20 p.m., while those with last names ending in M to Z will be dismissed from their assigned door at 3:35 p.m.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Entry and Dismissal process, please email entryanddismissal@kcs.on.ca.

Staggered Lunch

There are three lunch periods this year at the Junior School:

  • Grades 7 - 8: 11:35 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

  • JK and Grades 1, 2, 5, 6: 12:00 - 12:25 p.m.

  • SK and Grades 3 - 4: 12:25 - 12:50 p.m.

Staggered Be Active Times

Students at the Junior School get outside to Be Active several times a day:

  • Grades 1 and 2: 10:20 a.m.; 12:25 p.m.; 2:05 p.m.

  • Grades 3 and 4: 9:55 a.m.; 12:00 p.m.; 2:30 p.m.

  • Grades 5 and 6: 10:20 a.m.; 12:25 p.m.

  • Grades 7 and 8: 11:10 a.m.; 2:05 p.m.

Adjustments to these times may be made throughout the year and will be communicated on class schedules as needed.

Essential Visitors

To reduce the potential for exposure, only screened staff, students, and essential visitors are allowed to enter the Junior School. Essential visitors include first responders such as police, fire, and ambulance workers, building inspectors, and any tradespeople who are necessary to address a problem with our facility. Essential visitors must be fully vaccinated. When it’s necessary to be in the building, they will be at least 2 m away from others, except in the case of an emergency, and supervised to ensure compliance with our safety protocols. Unfortunately, and until it is recommended that schools ease this restriction, parents will not be permitted in the building.

The protocol described above also applies to the Senior School, with the exception that fully vaccinated staff of Centauri Arts will also be permitted at our site. The KCS Senior School is using the Centauri Arts studio while our permanent facility is under construction. Centauri Arts staff will follow our screening process and remain 2 m away from others in these instances.

For the safety of all, we ask those on our school property at entry and dismissal to put on a mask and stay 2 m apart from others not in your household. This includes all students, parents, caregivers, and staff. Young students are to stay within a close distance of their parents. We have dedicated members of faculty to help ensure students enter and exit the school safely. All other faculty will also be assisting, but from inside the school.

The entry and dismissal process is overseen by Mark Magee, Director of Operations. Parents with questions about entry and dismissal are asked to email entryanddismissal@kcs.on.ca .
