Did you think that maybe the Big Bad Wolf was just misunderstood? Or what if Little Red Riding Hood made a different choice as she walked through the forest? How would their stories be different? Our grade 3 Achieve Writing, Fractured Fairy Tales, revolved around rewriting these age-old classic fairy tales. Students debated how changing one event could change the direction of the story entirely, keeping the spirit of the classics, but engaging in deep imagination and creativity.
Let’s Imagine Another World
In the early stages of this Achieve Writing, students used some of the language arts skills they have learned from grades 1, 2, and 3. They analyzed common elements in fairy tales, including setting, characters, plot events, problems, and solutions. Then they learned a new skill; arranging all of these elements into a story arc format.
With their story arc, they were able to assess each story critically: what parts could be altered in a way to make the story interesting? What elements should still remain identical to the original narrative so that readers could understand it? Most importantly, they considered themes or messages to include in their new version of the fairy tale. Our young writers also developed their use of past tense verbs and quotation marks, which enhanced their narrative consistency.
Discussion and Sharing Bring Learning to Life
Collaborative learning was critical throughout the Achieve Writing. Students shared ideas in small groups and listened to their classmates, providing feedback as first readers. These talks prompted students to think about whether their stories were both interesting and well-structured. As they presented their work to their classmates, students worked on explaining their creative choices. They gained confidence and communication skills. As everyone worked through the process, they understood the value of working together and making gradual improvements. Most of all, they gained the ability to learn from one another.
The Final Product: A Look Back on Growth
In the end, students completed their fractured fairy tales and brought them to life through dramatic readings in class. This experience helped students demonstrate their story-writing and presenting abilities in an interesting, engaging format. For students, the Achieve Writing was an rich learning experience, including reading, planning, writing, editing, and presenting.
As you read the students’ work on the next page, please pay attention to not only the creative shifts in their stories, but to their technical skills as well. These fairy tales show how their language skills, imagination, and confidence are developing as emerging writers.
Fractured Fairy Tale
We are delighted to share these excerpts from our students' "My Fractured Fairy Tale" Achieve Writing. In this creative writing exercise, students reimagined classic folklore by adding humorous plot twists and modern elements through their own unique narratives and hand-drawn illustrations. These stories showcase the students' incredible imagination as they transform familiar legends into original, surprising adventures to share with you.
