Imagine a classroom buzzing with laughter, strategy, and teamwork — where writing doesn’t stay on paper, but jumps off the page into colorful, creative board games.
This year, our students took on an exciting new challenge that combined creativity, critical thinking, and communication. In their Achieve Writing, they were asked to create an educational board game designed to encourage more students to visit English Village.
Not only did they need to invent a fun and educational game, but they also had to write a clear and detailed instruction manual for it—a real-world task that pushed them to think like writers, players, and designers all at once.
Building Skills Step-by-Step
Beneath the fun of designing their own games, students were practicing important academic and real-world skills. Over the course of the project, they learned how to:
• Collect and organize information to write meaningful questions for their games.
• Study real examples by analyzing popular board games and how their instructions are written.
• Write with the player in mind by using bullet points, numbers, and simple, direct language to make sure anyone could pick up their game and understand how to play without confusion.
Each step taught them that good writing isn’t just about essays or reports—it’s about making ideas clear and inviting to others.
Creating Together, Succeeding Together
One of the most powerful parts of this project was the way students worked together. They brainstormed creative ideas, wrote original questions, designed boards from scratch, and crafted their own instruction manuals using Canva, an online design platform.
Along the way, students worked through challenges together. They had lively discussions—and sometimes disagreements—about what questions to include or how the board should look. There were moments of debate, negotiation, and compromise. It was refreshing to see our students so engaged, putting real thought and care into their work. Every choice they made, even the difficult ones, showed just how much they were invested in bringing their games to life.
See Their Hard Work Come to Life!
Their creativity truly shines in this project. Students explored a wide range of topics—from animals and basic physics to holidays and even celebrities! If you’re up for a challenge, come test your skills and play their board games!
