Albert Einstein said “imagination is more important than knowledge.” In the first project for grade 3 students this year, we asked students to use both imagination and knowledge. They combined what they know about the world with some extra creativity. In this project, Telling Tales, students created myths - stories that try to explain nature in fun, creative, and imaginative ways.
Curious Questions, Inventive Answers
The third graders read the story Why Sun and Moon Live in the Sky, in which the characters Sun and Moon built a huge house to invite their friend Water over. But after Water brought all the animals and people in the world with him, there was no more room left for Sun and Moon! So they went up into the sky to enjoy the view instead. We approached this story in two ways. First, we analyzed the text to understand how the author used character traits and plot elements to make the story more entertaining. Then, we discussed how ancient people may have really believed tales like this one. After all, they needed a way to explain the natural world.
From there, we worked classify other myths, legends, and folktales that explain things about the natural world. Afterwards, students got excited to brainstorm ideas for writing their own myth! They worked in groups to think of creative and fun stories. They came up with great ideas like Why Flowers Bloom and Where Rainbows Come From. There was a wide range of interests they wanted to include.
Writing Like a Pro
While students got excited about writing creative tales, we guided them to use language arts skills to make their writing more focused. They developed clever and creative characters based on their nature themes. These could be talking animals, giants, dragons, gods, and monsters. All of them had distinct personalities and well-developed traits.
Finally it was time to write. Using a well-developed plot structure, students told their mythical tales. Characters in myths usually try to solve the problem three times before they succeed, and in the end, the tale explains something about nature. Following guidelines like these, students made their stories similar to real ancient myths while still expressing their creativity.
Working Together to Achieve Goals
Students brainstorm themes, characters, and the plot structure of their myths in groups, but then they split up to write their own drafts individually. This caused two fun and interesting effects. First, it allowed to write their myths in their own authorial voice. Each student made minor changes to the characters and plot, even if they wrote about the same topic. Second, at the end of the project, group members met again. They had fun comparing their different versions of the same myths. Everything concluded with a dramatic reading of the myths around a (fake) campfire, with character voices and actions, props, and costumes. The project pushed students to develop their narrative writing skills while using creative ideas, teamwork, and having fun!

How Rabbit Got Her Long Legs
★ Ilsa Yeung 楊子筠 306
A long time ago, on a beautiful island, there was a cute, fluffy rabbit. Her legs were very short, but she was still adorable. All kinds of animals lived in peace, and one of their gods decided to give each animal a wish. The god told all the animals, “Line up to make your wish. But when someone else is making a wish, do not turn around or look.” All the animals lined up. Owl was one of them.
When it was Rabbit’s turn, she begged the god for her legs to become long. The god started to grant her wish, and her back legs became long. But then, Owl turned his head from front to back without moving his body to look.
The god saw what Owl was doing. She became furious and flew away. All the animals were angry with Owl. “It’s your fault!” they shouted. The animals began to quarrel, and peace was lost. Because the god didn’t finish granting Rabbit’s wish, she ended up with short front legs and long back legs. From that day on, Rabbit’s babies were born the same way.
Why Don't People Have Tails?
★ Owen Kao 高苡豪 306
A long time ago, there were two magical gods named Coke and Sprite. They lived in a bright, magical place above the Earth. They looked like people, but they had long, fluffy tails.
On Earth, there lived a magical elephant with a short tail. The elephant wanted a long tail like Coke and Sprite. He tried to make his tail longer with magic, but it didn’t work. So he asked Coke and Sprite if they could trade tails.
Coke and Sprite thought about the elephant’s wish. They were tired of living in the sky, and they wanted to visit Earth, so they asked the magical elephant if they could make a deal. They said, “If we swap tails, we need to swap places, too. The elephant thought about it and then agreed. Coke and Sprite started to come down to the earth.
When Coke and Sprite arrived on Earth, they became people. They realized that they didn’t like having short tails, so they decided to cut them off. From that day on, people no longer had tails.
Why Are There Clouds in the Sky?
★ Ellie Lu 呂艾橙 302
A long time ago there were no clouds. Sun was lonely in the sky. “Why am I the only thing in the sky?" Sun asked himself. "I'm so bored! Why doesn't anyone else live up here?" This made Sun feel unhappy.
One day, Sun had an idea. He asked his brother Mountain, “Can you play with me?"
"Sorry! I can't, I have work to do!" Mountain replied.
"Please!" Sun begged. But no matter how hard he begged, Mountain refused. Sun was sad. He wanted to give up, but he didn't. He went to ask his sister, Snow. "Can I play with you?" Sun asked.
"No! I can't! I'm busy!” Snow said with a shy voice.
"O.K fine!" Sun said, "Those were all reasons that were not true, they just don't want to play with me!" Sun thought. "Maybe I can just make a new friend by myself!" Sun looked into the air and tried to make a new friend with his imagination. "Can I play with you?" Sun asked the air. Suddenly a new white shape appeared in the air. It first popped out its eyes, then its mouth. It said "My name is Cloud. I can can play with you!"
"Let's play!" They both shouted with joy. From that day, Sun was no longer lonely!
Why Is There Rain?
★ Snow Chang 張舒安 303
A long time ago, high above the clouds, there was a glittering castle where a bright, cheerful god named Candy lived. One day, a pastel-colored dog ran into Candy’s arms. The dog licked Candy’s face like she was its owner. Candy brought the dog to her parents and asked, “Can I keep her?” Her parents agreed, and Candy named the dog Bubbles.
From that day on, Candy and Bubbles did everything together. They read books, played games, slept together, and Candy even made matching bracelets for them. Bubbles was always at the door to greet Candy when she came home.
One day, while they were playing fetch, Bubbles fell off the cloud where the castle was. She fell and fell until she landed in the human world. Candy saw everything and sobbed, saying, “Without Bubbles, what can I do?” Her tears fell to the human world as rain.
Bubbles looked up and saw Candy crying. She smiled to cheer Candy up, and Candy smiled back. From that day on, whenever Candy cried, it rained in the human world. When she cried a little, it drizzled, but when she sobbed, there was a thunderstorm. In summer, Bubbles would visit Candy, so it rarely rained then. This is why there is rain.
Why Does a Volcano Erupt?
★ Edward Chang 張凱迪 303
Once upon a time, in a land filled with green hills and blue lakes, there stood a lively mountain called Mount Blaze. It had a bright, fiery heart that made it shine like the Sun. The villagers loved Mount Blaze and gave it tasty fruits and pretty flowers to keep it happy. Every spring, they gathered at its base, singing and dancing to make the mountain feel special. Mount Blaze would rumble softly in delight, sending tiny sparks into the sky.
One day, a new king, who was tall and stern, came to rule the land. He didn’t believe in the old traditions and declared that Mount Blaze was just a pile of rocks. He told the villagers to stop giving gifts and focus on building homes instead. Without their love, Mount Blaze’s warm glow changed into a wild storm of sadness.
One starry night, it erupted with a loud roar! Lava shot into the sky like bright fireworks, and ash danced in the air. “Don’t forget me!” it seemed to shout. The frightened villagers quickly gathered fruits and flowers, rushing back to Mount Blaze. They sang and danced once again, offering their gifts. As they did, the eruption calmed, and Mount Blaze moved joyfully, sending tiny, colorful smoke into the sky.
From then on, the villagers honored Mount Blaze, knowing it would rumble if they ever forgot. The mountain’s warm glow returned, brighter than ever, reminding everyone of its strength. The legend of Mount Blaze spread, teaching people the importance of love and respect. This story was passed down through generations and never forgotten. Mount Blaze stood as a lasting reminder that if we respect nature, nature will love us back.
