The next project for our Grade 3 students is Building Boats. In this project, students will design a boat that can float and carry as much weight as possible. So why do some shapes float while others sink?
You will need : modelling clay and a sink half-filled with water
Which one of the following is correct?
(a)The ball, the stubby pencil, and the boat-shape will all float.
(b)The ball and the stubby pencil will float and the boat-shape will sink.
(c)The boat-shape will float and the other two will sink.
Students from all grades are invited to scan the QR code on Page 2 for this Quiz Contest.
How does it work?
When you put a shape in water, it pushes some of the water out of the way to make place for itself. If the shape weighs less than the weight of the water that it pushes out of the way, it will float. A boat floats because its special shape displaces a large amount of water!
