Garrett Morgan was born in 1877 in Paris, Kentucky. He received only a sixth grade education at Branch Elementary School in Kentucky, and then moved in search of work at fourteen in Cincinnati, Ohio. He worked as a sewing machine mechanic and handyman for a landowner.

Garrett Morgan was famous for several inventions that changed the world. He worked as a sewing machine mechanic and handyman for a landowner. In 1904, he got a patent for an improved sewing machine. Morgan did experiments with a liquid that gave sewing machine needles a high polish to prevent the needle from burning fabric as it sewed. In 1905, Morgan accidentally discovered that the liquid could straighten hair. Garrett Morgan invented a traffic light after witnessing an accident between a horse-drawn carriage and a car which sparked curiosity to prevent the likelihood of future events occurring like the one he witnessed. He created a traffic light, which used moving arms to tell people stop, go, and slow down and sold it to an electricity company for $40,000.
