Term 3 Week 1
Newsletter

Welcome back!

Kia ora whanau,

It's been a busy first week in Base 5 already, with our students getting straight back into their full learning programme from day one.

Our students have started new UC4L groups this term, and our focus is on creating projects that are based on curriculum areas they haven't had as much experience in as others. It's been great to see heaps of creative ideas flowing already, and we're looking forward to seeing some great projects.

It's a busy term as always with extracurricular activities, especially sports. We have 12 sports events this term, including our five day Sports Camp in Week 10. Our athletes have been training hard since the beginning of Term 2, and are ready to take on the other schools!

As always, you can get in touch with the Base 5 teachers at any time by email, or come into class and say hello!:

ATTENDANCE & LATENESS

Our goal as a class this term is to achieve 90% attendance or higher.

So far this year, we have achieved:
Term 1: 90.0%
Term 2: 89.7%

As you can see, we are already very close to achieving 90% over the year, and so it is important to ensure that your child is coming to school on-time every day, and is getting plenty of rest at home.

Well done to Kayla, Marissa, Jared and Hazel who have not missed a day of school this year!

Mitey In Action!

Mitey is our learning programme that is run at Kauri Flats School that teaches our students about mental health and wellbeing.

In Base 5 we've been looking at the book "Mophead" by Selina Tusitala Marsh. It is a story about the author's childhood, and how she dealt with teasing and not feeling accepted. As a class we've been looking at our own experiences dealing with similar issues, and how those situations make us feel.

Literacy Magazines

Our focus for literacy this term is writing, and in particular looking at different styles of writing and how we can better engage our readers.

We are designing individual magazines about a chosen topic, and then creating different pieces of writing that relate to that topic. We've had some fantastic ideas so far during our brainstorming and planning sessions. Every part of our magazine is designed by each student, including all writing, design, and pictures. We're looking forward to seeing how they develop over the term, and to see our students' uniqueness shine through!
