The flute is the smallest of the beginner instruments. It is a very popular selection each year, but only a small portion of those wishing to play flute will be selected.
Physical Characteristics
tudents interested in flute should be able to form a slight “frown” with the upper lip and create a smooth, even lip line. Flute tone is produced by directing a very small, focused airstream to a precise spot on the tone hole. Any pronounced dip or unevenness in the center of the upper lip can make it more difficult to aim the air with the level of accuracy required for a characteristic flute sound.
Flute players should also demonstrate good finger dexterity and coordination, as the instrument requires agile movement across multiple keys, especially in fast musical passages.
Students with a pronounced overbite (significantly receded jaw) may find it more challenging to produce a clear and consistent tone on the flute. During instrument fitting, this factor should be carefully evaluated to help ensure student success.
Other Considerations
Students with double-jointed fingers should avoid selecting flute as double-jointedness can cause lack of agility in the fingers.
