How Records are Made

Varsity Running and Field Event Records

All running times are based on "hand held" or FAT (Fully Automatic Timing). FAT is preferred as they are as close to "real time" as possible. If times are hand held, they will not be as accurate or consistent. If hand held times are used for Records, it is to be accepted by someone that is a reliable timer and must be converted before it is a record. Below are the rules for converting from hand held to an accepted time.

  1. A hand time is rounded UP to the nearest tenth (e.g. 10.83 seconds becomes 10.9, 11.77 becomes 11.8...a 37.34 becomes 37.4.

  2. What happens next depends on the length of the race:

  • For races under 300 meters: A conversion factor of 0.24 seconds is added to the time.

  • For races from 300 meters up to (but not including) 800 meters: A conversion factor of 0.14 seconds is added to the time.

  • For races 800 meters and above: No further conversion factor is added beyond the initial rounding up to the next tenth.
